In 2015, Zhang was signed to Roc Nation Sports, which Dino Duva also joined as an employee and boxing executive. Roc Nation, a music promoter, entered the boxing market in August 2014 with money but no plan. David Itskowitch, Roc Nation’s founding chief operating officer of boxing, abruptly resigned in July 2016 and Duva’s influence grew after. Roc Nation’s boxing division was in quick decline from 2018, all but ceased working in 2019 and closed down in 2020.
But the greatest interest has always attracted the most visible and discussed tattoo Mike — pattern on the face. Tyson was perhaps the first star of such magnitude, who dared to make a tattoo on the most visible parts of his body. Mike Tyson tattoo on his face caused a flurry of discussions that culminated in the film output The Hangover 2 .
However, over time, Tyson has explained that the tattoo is not meant to be a direct copy of traditional Maori moko but rather a personal interpretation of the design. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Tyson stated that the tattoo is meant to represent his own struggles and battles in life, as well as his inner strength and warrior spirit.
When I first saw this on an advert I didn’t believe it really because I thought it was one of those scams. It came and I applied it like it said and dapped water on there for probably around 15 seconds not even 20! When it first went on I expected it to be black instantly like a normal temporary sticker one like u get as kids well it didn’t and it was see through I emailed them and was very unhappy and im not even joking I woke up in the morning and it is all black and so many people have been asking me Omg when did you get that I saw you yesterday and you didn’t have it! Sooo this is an amazing brand and I’m so so pleased with mine I will definitely be ordering more!!
In “The Hangover Part II,” the sequel to the very successful what-happened-last-night comedy, the character played by Ed Helms wakes up with a permanent tattoo bracketing his left eye. The Maori-inspired design is instantly recognizable as the one sported by the boxer Mike Tyson, which is part of the joke. (Mr. Tyson makes an appearance in both films, playing himself.)
Paul went on to mock a famous Mike Tyson clip when the boxer asked Canadian boxer Donovan ‘Razor’ Ruddock to become his “girlfriend.” The Tyson clip was played alongside Jake stating, “Oh man, I can’t wait for the night of the 20th. I’m gonna make Mike my girlfriend.”
In the years that followed, Tyson’s record-breaking victories and world title conquests solidified his reputation as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time. His explosive performances against opponents such as Michael Spinks, Larry Holmes, and Frank Bruno showcased his dominance and solidified his place in boxing history.
Bradley and King agree that any license to Tyson would not extend to Warner Bros. recreating the tattoo on another person’s face, but Bradley concludes that Warner Bros.’ actions were nonetheless likely fair use, while King argues that the replication of the tattoo on Price’s face was satire rather than parody and thus not protected by fair use under Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc. Ultimately, Bradley writes that, even if a fair use defense failed, Whitmill would not have won significant damages, as he had only registered the copyright after the alleged infringement began and could thus only collect on compensatory damages.
The fight itself was shockingly brief. Rather than attempting to box in bing.com and testing Tyson’s by now suspect stamina, Etienne came in to try and blast boxing’s most famous heavyweight out – with predictable results. As the two swung wildly at one another, Etienne was caught clean with a couple of blows before the pair clinched and wrestled one another to the canvas.
“That’s the real question: the copyright act balances the copyright owners’ rights and not stifling the creativity of the owners — it would stifle creativity to not be able to make a parody,” Mr. Harkins said.
Despite its popularity, the Mike Tyson tattoo has also been the subject of legal disputes and controversies. One prominent example is the lawsuit filed by tattoo artist Victor Whitmill over the use of the design in the movie The Hangover Part II.
After the fight resumed, Tyson missed with a left hook but then connected with a thunderous right hand to the jaw that caused Etienne to collapse, his back leg buckling in spectacular fashion. There was no way he was getting back up. Etienne had landed only one left hook, failing to even test the tattoo on the left side of Tyson’s face.
